Mencap issues press with learning disability guide

Learning disability charity Mencap is targeting journalists with a guide on how the press can better understand people with learning disabilities in a bid to raise their media profile.

The guide, ‘Reporting without prejudice’, gives journalists practical advice on appropriate use of language, media tips and general information on learning disability issues. It is being sent to specialist community and charity sector reporters, print and broadcast social affairs correspondents and news and features editors in the regional and national press.

Mencap hopes the guide will lead to an increase in the amount of people with learning disabilities represented in the media as the charity embarks on a wave of PR activity promoting its awareness week.

It is also launching an online campaign asking people to email their MPs about improving healthcare provision for people with learning disabilities.
