Diary: Hit or miss ... UKIP election result

The reinvention of former chat show host Robert Kilroy-Silk as UKIP politician has played well with the electorate as the smooth-talking Brummie became one of nine extra MEPs the party gained from a 9.2 per cent surge in its vote in last week's European elections.

The Independent said UKIP has described Kilroy-Silk's candidacy as a 'public relations coup'. UKIP's success in pushing the Lib Dems into fourth position by share of the European elections vote seemed to confirm public approval.
