Diary: Watching paint dry takes on reality TV

Did amateur anarchist Kitten's antics in the opening week of Big Brother 5 put you off the latest series of the reality TV show?

If so, you may well be one of those who logged on to a UKTV Style webcast called Watching Paint Dry, which launched on the same day as the latest BB and pitted seven paint varieties against each other to find out Britain's most exciting drier.

This wry take on the 'reality broadcast' genre was promoted by Taylor Herring Communications and, we are told, attracted an impressive 220,000 viewers in its first four days.

Only 'silk' felt the wrath of the fickle public - being 'voted out' - before UKTV decided enough was enough and called a halt to the stunt.

The show also appealed to the media, with the story being picked up by the Chicago Sun-Times and Pakistan's Daily Times, along with the UK nationals.

UKTV head of lifestyle Nick Thorogood billed the show as 'at least as interesting as other reality shows'.

But clearly there was little prospect of exclusive OK! magazine photoshoots or the potential for furtive snogging.
