France Telecom names Spanish comms boss

Madrid: France Telecom has promoted Maria Jose Estrella to communications director for the group in Spain, replacing Isabel Ontoso, who will now lead the marketing department.

Estrella, who was previously head of communications for France Telecom's Internet unit Wanadoo, will lead a six strong team to carry out the group's PR, including media and institutional relations in Spain. She reports to FT's country manager Antonio Anguita.

Estrella will be assisted by David Martinez and Maria Jesus Arozemena who will head the media relations and PR and institutional relations departments respectively.

FT has two main operating units in Spain: Internet unit Wanadoo, which has 1.5 million subscribers, and telephone company Uni2, which has 2.6 million customers.

In her new role Estrella said she will continue to position FT as a 'broad global telecoms group.' She added that FT expects revenues from the Spanish subsidiary to rise sharply this year, fuelled by new Wanadoo and Uni2 product launches and a major push to expand in the country's fast-growing broadband market.

Estrella joined FT via Wanadoo's acquisition of Internet company EresMas, where she was communications director, in 2002. Prior to that she was head of external relations at the Spanish fashion retailer Cortefiel.
