Diary: Insurer counts cost of diamond stunt

A stunt by Bleach Publicity at last month's Monaco Grand Prix was to prove an expensive headache for insurers after the firm came up a with an eye-catching idea to promote Steinmetz's sponsorship of Jaguar.

Diamond trader and De Beers Group client Steinmetz supplied several shirt button-sized stones to adorn the car nose cones of Mark Webber and Christian Klein.

But shortly after the drivers and supermodel Bridget Hall had shown off the stones and a 108-carat neckpiece (see picture), Klein crashed out of the race, losing a stone worth an estimated £140,000.

'The insurance brokers went through the roof when they realised they would have to pay for the stone's loss,' says Bleach account manager Yasmin Eady.

No doubt the lucky racetrack cleaner who found the stone shared the tears.
