BBC in PR drive to secure support for Sport Relief

The BBC is mounting a PR blitz to drum up support for its Sport Relief campaign, with a raft of fundraising events involving celebrities and sports personalities set to take place over the next ten weeks.

Sport Relief, an offshoot of Comic Relief, was created two years ago to raise money for UK and worldwide charities through sport.

This year’s campaign sees British Olympic rower Sir Steve Redgrave, comedian Jo Brand, pop star Rachel Stevens, athlete Colin Jackson and DIY SOS presenter Nick Knowles among the celebrities lining up to promote Sport Relief.

Launched on Tuesday at London’s Science Museum, the campaign aims to encourage people to take part in a sponsored mile-long run in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Sir Roger Bannister’s 3.59-minute mile.

The BBC is targeting national, regional, ethnic, trade and consumer press with information about a series of celebrity fundraising stunts in the run-up to a Sport Relief night hosted by Gary Lineker on BBC1.

These include a special benefit performance of the We Will Rock You musical, a ‘Westminster mile run’ by MPs and the launch of Rachel Stevens’s official fundraising track. Schools are also being targeted with information about the campaign in a bid to get children involved.

Fourteen regional sporting venues across the UK have offered to provide fundraisers with places to run their miles.

‘We welcome support from any charities and sports clubs that wish to get involved in the campaign,’ said Sport Relief media manager Alison Scott.
