Meecham resigns over comms spat

Haringey Council leader George Meehan has announced he is to step downthis month and is believed to be the latest casualty in the ongoing spat between the council and its comms staff.

The stand-off began in February when seven of its comms team rejected plans to streamline the department and all but one of its eight staff were axed (PRWeek, 20 February).

A demonstration in support of the comms team was held outside the council’s offices on 26 April. This followed a letter from Austin Mitchell MP to Meehan the week before, urging Meehan to resolve issues ‘in a principled and reasonable fashion’.

It is understood corporate comms manager Nicky Hulford has also resigned after only ten months in the post.
