Heinz bids to end Democrats ‘link’

PITTSBURGH: The HJ Heinz Company has launched a media relations initiative to quell rumours it will be involved in John Kerry’s US presidential campaign after it emerged that his wife was a member of the Heinz family.

The effort is in response to threats of a boycott if Heinz supported the Democratic presidential candidate.

The Heinz family owns less than four per cent of the company’s stock and Kerry’s wife Teresa Heinz is not involved in its management.

Heinz has received around 500 phone calls and emails over the past month asking questions about its possible campaign involvement. V-P of corporate comms Debora Foster has contacted editors and talkshow hosts declaring its non-involvement with the Democrats.

Edelman will advise Heinz while Pittsburgh-based Veritas Public Relations will monitor media coverage.
