Diary: Campbell makes Manchester spin

Tony Blair's credibility with the country at large remains on the line over the war in Iraq but the spin doctor closest to the PM's heart is doing his best to win friends (in the PR community, at least).

Geraldine Vesey, director at Manchester-based PR firm Spin Media, has spent much of the past month on the 'email and phone' to Alastair Campbell, seeking to get bums on seats for the former Downing Street man's 'An Evening with...' session at Manchester's Bridgewater Hall last week.

He is 'very professional and a nice bloke' says Vesey, before gushing forth about Campbell's availability for local interviews (he had a session on Key 103) and his appetite for work ('he doesn't seem to know what weekends are').

Vesey clearly bonded with him. A picture which arrived in PRWeek's inbox of her with Campbell and, er, local Manchester singer-songwriter Mick Hucknall, was labelled: 'Geraldine, Mick and Al.' Al, eh? Be careful not to get too close and tread on Tony's toes.
