Diary: Hit or Miss... Binge drinking

The Government's Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy has been published in a blaze of publicity but has been heavily criticised for not going far enough. Voluntary codes of practice for manufacturers and retailers have been favoured, while alcohol misuse charities said more should be spent on treatment and counselling. Broadcasters chose to accompany stories with footage of the late-night drunken scraps that occur in British cities every weekend. Such footage overshadowed the messages the Government was seeking to get out to encourage the young people of Britain to go easy on their livers.
