SDI puts global PR briefs out to pitch

Government investment body Scottish Development International (SDI) is on the hunt for agencies to manage its global PR.

The five lots up for tender include PR and media relations for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), the US and Canada, and Asia Pacific; a creative agency to work with PR organisations across the world; and a research company.

SDI’s PR is currently managed by Weber Shandwick, which handles EMEA and North America from London, and Ogilvy PR, which likewise deals with Asia Pacific. Both agencies were appointed in 2001 for a three-year period.

SDI is looking to appoint agencies for a two-year period with the possibility of a one-year extension.

The authority has undertaken a direct mail campaign and put classified advertising in key trade press to publicise the tender.

In 2001 the body – which is funded by the Scottish Executive and Scottish Enterprise – launched a global communications strategy to explain its approach to international economic investment, focusing on how it supports the export of Scottish skills to world markets and the import of expertise for exploitation in Scotland.

SDI replaced former inward investment group Locate in Scotland and previous promotion group Scottish Trade International with a view to creating a unified international economic development agency. It is operated by the Scottish Executive and Scottish Enterprise.

The contractual start for the agency tenders will be 1 October.
