Ex-FA boss Barber to take Ogilvy EMEA role

Former Football Association marketing and communications director Paul Barber is to join global PR giant Ogilvy PR Worldwide in its top job across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Barber is poised to join next month in the newly created role of European president, a position that will see PR bosses across 30 offices reporting in to him.

Barber, who told PRWeek he was unable to comment without ‘putting pen to paper’, will also join the European board of the WPP-owned Ogilvy & Mather group.

Barber, who left the FA last November, is likely to report to both O&M EMEA chief exec and UK group chair Mike Walsh, with a dotted line to Ogilvy PR Worldwide CEO Marcia Silverman.

Prior to the FA, where he worked for three-and-a-half years, Barber was director of comms at the retail arm of Barclays Bank. He has also held marketing jobs at Inchcape and Abbey National.

In addition to the Ogilvy role, Barber is believed to be also in discussions over taking a part-time non-executive role within football.

* Meanwhile it has emerged that another former FA media chief, Paul Newman, is working for Cardiff City Council in the role of acting director of communications.

Newman – who continues to run his own agency, Paul Newman Communications – is one of the names linked with the vacant PR job at Chelsea FC.
