Westminster sets up local tax game

Westminster City Council this week unveiled a creative way of communicating how council tax is calculated.

The communications team at the council has designed an online game on the issue.

Spokeswoman Sophie Hoggarth said: ‘We were thinking about capital expenditure and how to communicate it in a friendly way. We wanted to make a complicated issue accessible.’

Players are asked questions about the costs of managing services and correct answers are rewarded with additional funding – but players must be careful how much they spend or the council tax will soar.

Hoggarth said: ‘We were hoping it would become a viral email. We think it has because we have had responses from other councils.’

Copies of the game have been sent to Westminster residents Tony Blair and Michael Howard, but the council has yet to hear from them. The game is available at www.westminster.gov.uk/counciltaxgame.
