Wear steps into the newly created role from Newcastle Gateshead Initiate (NGI), where she was head of corporate affairs. In her new role, Wear will promote the council’s PeopleFirst agenda, a drive to integrate council and other public services and bring them closer to the people that use them.
The council’s chief executive, Ged Fitzgerald, said: ‘Susan has an excellent track record. With her broad mix of experience she is ideally placed to develop
Sunderland’s image and its communications.’
Wear won the IPR Communicator of the Year title in 2002. Formerly a journalist in the region, Wear has worked in media in the north east for 20 years.
During this time she has campaigned nationally and internationally to promote the region’s World Heritage sites, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the redevelopment of Newcastle Quayside and the Gateshead
National Garden Festival.
