DIARY: Hit or Miss...

Today BBC Radio 4's flagship programme hit the headlines last week when it published the results of a vote among listeners, asked to propose legislation they would like to see passed. Of 26,000 votes, the winning idea (on 37 per cent) was a law to allow home-owners to use any means to defend their property from intruders. Although this cute PR stunt generated plentiful headlines, the programme has been criticised for mistaking its massive audience for one of metropolitan liberals and though there was surprise at such a draconian measure being suggested, two-in-five tells its own story.
