Wrenn has been made managing editor of production and newsgathering for Europe, the Middle East and Africa and will oversee programmes such as World Business Today, Global Office and International Correspondents.
Wrenn was previously editor of CNN's international (non-US) websites
and will continue to be responsible for all English-language web operations, as well as CNNarabic.com. The TV and online services target business decision-makers and opinion formers, Wrenn said.
He told PRWeek: 'We're interested in anything that has international impact or changes the landscape in which we work. This can be serious or light-hearted - but the key thing is for us to be informative. We want interesting companies, not necessarily the biggest companies.'
PROs may find opportunities to pitch ideas. However, Wrenn added: 'In general, we find it easier to deal with companies directly, and the one thing we really dislike is when a PRO promises a CEO and we end up with the marketing manager or general spokesperson.'
Wrenn will report to CNN senior vice-president Rena Golden, who oversees all non-US programming. Senior V-P Tony Maddox, who held some of the responsibilities that Wrenn now assumes, is moving from London to CNN's HQ in Atlanta in January to take up an expanded international role. He has managed the London operation since 1998.
Wrenn's appointment is the latest in CNN's international directorate, a management group set up to control the broadcaster's news gathering, online, radio and other media interests.
Wrenn joined CNN in 2000, prior to which he was duty editor and UK editor of BBC News Online. He has also worked at the Press Association, Reuters and BBC Ceefax.
CNN.com was set up in 1995, with an international edition of the site launched in 2000.
