MEDIA: C4 News revamps science coverage with Nature writer

Channel 4 News has appointed Tom Clarke as science correspondent with a brief to bring a 'fresh perspective' to coverage. He replaces the programme's long-standing science expert, Andrew Veitch, on 1 December.

Clarke will contribute both to the channel's midday show, News at Noon, and the flagship 7pm bulletin. Channel 4 News deputy editor Martin Fewell told PRWeek: 'We are particularly keen on applying scientific understanding on issues of public policy,'

These include GM food, foot-and-mouth disease and bio-terrorism post-September 11. Fewell said input from PROs would be welcome. 'But it's not a question of sitting in the office waiting for stories to fall out of the sky,' he insisted.

Channel 4 News viewers can also expect greater use of studio technology to explain complex scientific ideas.

Clarke is currently a reporter on science journal Nature, but has also worked on science, health and technology stories for independent TV companies in New York.
