Richmond council prepares for end of comms review

Troubled London Borough of Richmond upon Thames has completed its best value review of communications, according to Westminster City Council head of comms Alex Aiken, who is on part-time secondment to the borough.

Aiken leads Richmond’s comms team of three staff on secondment from Westminster council, plus one communications assistant from Richmond (PRWeek, 25 April).

The best value report, to be published at the end of this month, will recommend one of three options for the future structure of its comms team: bringing the operation back in-house, contracting it out to the private sector, or continuing to work with comms staff from other councils. A decision is expected in February.

Aiken said the review was likely to recommend slashing the number of the borough’s 1,000 printed publications by about half, establishing an internal comms officer post and reasserting the importance of communicating with local newspapers.
