OPINION: Lee is the right choice for Olympic bid

If London 2012 chairman Barbara Cassani was looking for someone whose professional qualities mirrored her own to lead the PR fight for the Olympics nearly a decade from now, she appears to have picked the right man for the job.

Mike Lee's reputation at UEFA, and before that as chief spokesman of the Premier League, is of a tenacious fighter, who is prepared to be combative in promoting his client's best interest.

His time at UEFA has seen a number of major issues rise and fall in importance, from the ugly spectre of racism being reared again to negotiations for TV rights to key European matches.

This will have proved a valuable training ground, so to speak, for the issues the entire bid team now faces as it campaigns to win the games in place of Paris, New York, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro. The bid battle just got more interesting.
