London boroughs top PRWeek’s first Council Rankings

Three London boroughs have the largest communications teams in England, according to research conducted for PRWeek’s first Council Ran-kings survey, covering all unitary, London and metro-politan borough authorities.

This found that Greenwich, Haringey and Newham have the largest comms teams, with staff numbers of 47, 30 and 29 respectively.

However, the survey also found that large comms teams do not necessarily equate to excellent provision of services.

When compared with the Audit Commission’s Comprehensive Performance Assessment (CPA) review, which ranks council services as either poor, weak, fair, good or excellent, this showed that all three top- ranking councils were in the bottom three categories.

Greenwich and Newham achieved only a ‘fair’ ranking while Haringey was ‘weak’.

Kirklees Metropolitan Authority in West Yorkshire, with a 22-strong communications team, is the only council in the top ten that was awarded an ‘excellent’ CPA rating.
