Orange consumer account in five-way pitch

Mobile phone giant Orange has shortlisted five agencies in a mega-pitch for its consumer PR account.

An Orange spokesperson said a hire was planned within a month.

A statement from Orange said that incumbent agency Cohn & Wolfe’s contract ‘has now come to an end’, and that the firm was ‘looking to appoint a new agency to handle consumer PR for the UK market’.

Cohn & Wolfe is not one of the undisclosed agencies pitching. The Orange statement said: ‘We agreed to part on the best of terms.’

The spokesperson said there ‘will be no change’ to Edelman’s contract handling B2B work, the literary account handled by MacLaurin and Cake’s events portfolio across film and music.

Agency search and selection firm AAR is co-ordinating the pitch, alongside Orange UK head of PR and sponsorship Niamh Byrne and senior consumer PR manager Ziggy Gilsenan.

Gilsenan joined in July in the newly created role from a role as media director at KLP.

Orange’s core consumer PR account was last reviewed in July last year (PRWeek, 19 July 2002) in a multi-agency pitch won by Cohn & Wolfe.

In June PRWeek revealed that newly appointed comms chief Martin Cardoe was to review Orange’s financial PR account, following the resignation of Citigate Dewe Rogerson from the brief (PRWeek, 20 June).

The spokesperson said the firm had ‘no announcement to make’ on that review.
