DIARY: Captive presidents and discussion at European university PRO meeting

PROs from European countries as distant as Latvia and Malta descended on the north east of England earlier this month for the 15th annual European Universities Public Relations and Information Officers' Association (EUPRIO) conference.

The aim of the conference was to promote professionalism and best practice among university PROs, with the 190 delegates discussing topics such as the role of higher education in regional development agency One NorthEast's strategy to regenerate the region.

The event also saw the hand-over of the EUPRIO presidency from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich PRO Dr Rolf Guggenbuhl to Southampton University external relations director Peter Reader.

To mark the presidency switch, Reader and Guggenbuhl were placed in the stocks at Hartlepool Historic Quay and had to serenade delegates with a Swiss version of What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor? before being released.

Intriguing stuff, and we await with interest news of how delegates will keep themselves amused at next year's conference, which will be in Malta.
