Watchdog slams energy firms for bad PR strategy

Electricity and gas watchdog Energywatch is calling for a meeting of government regulators, power generators and energy consumers to find ways to improve communication with users during crises.

The call follows the publication of a report by Energywatch in which its chief executive Allan Asher criticised electricity companies’ handling of communications and PR during last October’s storms and the blackout in London two weeks ago.

The report also criticised energy firms for poor performance in paying compensation to customers affected by cuts. Energywatch director of communications Mario Dunn said: ‘These companies need to manage the way they communicate with their customers a lot better.

‘We need to bring together the key stakeholders, such as the power companies, government regulators and the public, to develop an effective communications process.’
