Audit head urges councils to begin CPA preparations

Audit Commission director of communications Colin Douglas has called for unitary authorities and county councils to start preparing communications strategies for the next phase of its Comprehensive Performance Assessment programme (CPA).

The scheme, which effectively created the first council performance league table when it reported late last year, will be revisited by the commission this December.

Speaking at the IPR Local Government Group conference, Douglas said it was vital that communications for this next phase was in place, as those that have improved in all services, including comms, have the chance to go up a grade.

He said: ‘Right now, councils should be developing their “direction of travel”, which is basically describing how the council is progressing…

‘That information will be shared with councils and published with their scores in mid-December.’
