The promotion means that Edwards, who previously had the more junior role of home editor, will now have overall editorial control for all home news output on Channel 4. This includes the evening news programme, as well as the lunchtime bulletin, anchored by Krishnan Guru-Murthy.
She replaces Kerry Blackburn, who is now a programme editor, following a period of maternity leave.
According to an ITN insider, Edward is known for favouring, 'hard-hitting news rather than celebrity soft-focus news.'
Other appointments announced this week to the news programme include that of Jonathan Miller as foreign correspondent, former BBC journalist Darshana Soni as a full-time reporter. Joint producer and reporter Katie Razzall has also been made a full-time reporter.
