Charities work to stop exploitation of paying tenants

Charities Shelter and Citizens Advice have launched a PR-led campaign this week calling for a national tenancy deposit scheme to be included in the forthcoming Housing Bill.

A joint report by the charities estimates landlords are withholding nearly £800m of tenant’s money, with no statutory protection for tenants.

‘We want to set up a scheme where money is held in trust by an organisation and reassigned when tenancies are switched,’ said Shelter media officer Matt Cornish.

A select committee has already suggested proposals for such a scheme be included in the autumn bill, although they are not in the current draft.
