Mitty PR blunder turns spotlight on PM aide Tom Kelly

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman Tom Kelly, who apologised this week for comparing scientist Dr David Kelly to fictional fantasist Walter Mitty, is still in post as PRWeek goes to press, despite mounting calls for his departure.

Tom Kelly, one of Blair’s two official spokesmen released a statement apologising ‘unreservedly’ to the late Dr Kelly’s family for his remarks.

As MPs from all parties called for Kelly to resign, a Downing Street spokesman said there was nothing further to add to Kelly’s apology.

Tom Kelly made the Mitty remark – which was reported in Monday’s Independent – during what he said, in a statement, he ‘thought was a private conversation with a journalist’.

One former Labour comms director told PRWeek: ‘This will seriously damage Tom Kelly, and that’s a shame as he is highly regarded by Number 10 and generally well respected by the parliamentary lobby.’
