Essex Council set to lose nine roles in comms review

Details of the cuts to affect Essex County Council’s communications team have been announced.

The council’s bosses have ordered the team to cut its annual £1.8m budget by £300,000, resulting in the axing of nine roles and the relocation of a further nine staff into other departments.

The four-strong internal communications team will move to human resources, three public consultation staff will move into a newly created policy unit and events staff will move to the chairman’s office.

This will cut the 42-strong team to just 24 staff, who will focus on only media relations, marketing and promotions.

A council spokesman said it was hoped none of the nine axed posts will require compulsory redundancies, but this is still an option.

A final decision on which posts are to be axed will be made by the end of this month.

The cuts were called for to address an anticipated low central government grant (PRWeek, 24 June).
