DIARY: Mercurial Pitcher gives up on demanding quiz

Surprising news to report from the St Bride's Fleet Street summer party, held last week in EC4.

Luther Pendragon co-founder George Pitcher shocked all by simply 'giving up' on the quiz, citing a failure to answer the easy question: Which pop singer died in the year James Irving became administrator of St Brides?' (answer: Freddie Mercury).

Pitcher - on course to be ordained as an NSM (non-stipendiary minister, or, Pitcher quips, 'not short of money') in 2005 - justified his premature cessation, saying: 'I got stuck. It was a demanding quiz.'

Hopefully, the church's ongoing fundraising push will show more perseverance.
