Retail group loses PR head Smith to new energy body

The British Retail Consortium is on the hunt for a new top communicator, following news that director of corporate affairs David Smith has been poached to run policy and press at a new trade body being devised to represent the energy distribution sector.

Smith, who is credited with bolstering the BRC’s profile during his three-year tenure, is to take up the new post at the beginning of September.

The new body has been provisionally named ‘the Energy Networks Association’ and represents energy distributors, including the National Grid.

As director of policy, Smith will recruit to complete a four-strong team, comprising a research manager, a marketing communications manager and a public affairs manager.

Smith will report to the as-yet-unnamed chief executive of the organisation, on a brief that encompasses press and PR, parliamentary and regulatory affairs and policy formulation.

‘The big challenge is to actually establish ourselves and our relationship with Government and key stakeholders,’ Smith said. ‘There are lots of important decisions coming out of Brussels.’

‘We need to make sure our members are well represented in the UK and in Brussels,’ he added.
