WASHINGTON, DC: Ari Fleischer last week stepped down as President Bush’s chief spokesman, as reported in May (PRWeek, 30 May), to set up his own corporate media relations firm, Ari Fleischer Communications. As expected, Fleischer has been replaced by his deputy, Scott McClellan.

JAKARTA: Pertamina, Indonesia’s state-owned oil company, has hired Ruder Finn to handle an international corporate comms programme. Senior vice-president and director of the agency’s global issues communication group Anne Glauber leads a New York-based account team.

CHICAGO: London-based B2B and tech agency Mulberry Marketing Communications this month opened its first international office in Chicago. Start-up clients for the bureau include three tech companies – Digi International, NetSilicon and Inside Out Networks. The office is headed by Matt Serra.

ST PETERSBURG: The third

annual Baltic PR Weekend will be held in St Petersburg, Russia, on 18 and 19 September. The event is a joint initiative of the European PR Confederation, the Russian Public Relations Association and Russian PR agency SPN Granat.

PARIS: Stéphane Billiet has been appointed president and director-general of Hill & Knowlton/Thompson Corp, the joint-venture of H&K

International and J Walter Thompson in France. Billiet was formerly general manager.

NEW YORK: People magazine has hired Nancy Valentino, a former marketing and business developing executive at auction house Christie’s, to fill its top PR post, which has been vacant for the past few months. Valentino joins in the new role of director of communications.

MUNICH: Tech PR group Eurocom PR Network has signed up Munich’s Schwartz PR as its partner in Germany. The nine-year-old IT and service sector specialist replaces Globalcom as Eurocom’s partner agency in that country.

JOHANNESBURG: Tin Can Communications has appointed Yvonne Loxton to launch a celebrity, music and entertainment arm. Loxton reports to Tin Can managing director Debby Reader.

PARIS: Pricewaterhouse-Coopers has hired Brigitte Guillemette as external

relations adviser to territory senior partner Pierre Anglade. Guillemette was formerly comms and PA director for Commissariat à L’Energie Atomique, France’s nuclear energy authority.
