MEDIA: C4 restructures ed team

Channel 4 News has restructured its senior editorial team, doubling the number of programme editors, following the launch of the channel's noon news bulletin earlier this year (PRWeek, 16 May).

Ben Monro-Davies, Charlie Beckett and Julie Hulme have been promoted to programme editors, alongside existing programme editor Chris Watkins.

Senior home news editor Kerry Blackburn has been acting programme editor, although it has not been decided whether she will continue in this dual role. All report to Channel 4 News editor Jim Gray.

Beckett and Hulme will concentrate on News at Noon, with some work on the evening show. Monro-Davies has recently completed a stint as assistant programme editor on the 7pm show.

Malcolm Boughen has been promoted to assistant programme editor. He will also be responsible for planning and preparation of obituaries for royals and major political figures.

Five producers - Sally Gould, Girish Juneja, Katie Brown, Lucy Johnson and Scott Reeves - have also been appointed to the news team. Gray said the promotions demonstrated that the editorial team had 'real strength in depth'.

He added: 'News at noon is starting to look good and now we intend to build up the audience. Channel 4 News at 7pm has been on peak form recently.'

Channel 4 News interviews with Alastair Campbell over the 'dodgy dossier', and Trupti Patel following her acquittal on charges of murdering her three children, have received widespread media attention.

Gray is looking to recruit another five producers. In addition, three senior correspondents, covering Washington, science and foreign affairs are being sought.

Current Washington correspondent David Smith is quitting to concentrate on teaching in the US, while science correspondent Andrew Veitch is leaving to go freelance. Foreign affairs correspondent Gaby Rado was killed in an accident while reporting on the war in Iraq.
