BPI launches card to promote Euro 2004 sponsorship

Madrid: Portuguese bank BPI, Mastercard, Galp, CTT and Vista Alegre have teamed to launch a UEFA Euro 2004 credit card.

The move is the first major initiative to promote the companies as official sponsors of the soccer championship, to be played in Portugal next summer.

Sports marketing and PR firm Inside Stuff is to publicize the credit card as well as a string of events in coming months to promote client BPI.

The firm, owned by British sports marketer SEM Group, on Thursday organised a major event to introduce the card with the Portuguese press.

Filipa Roquette, press director for BPI, said that the card will enhance the image of BPI, Mastercard, petrol firm Galp, mail company CTT, home silver-ware maker Vista Alegre and Adidas Portugal as official sponsors.

As part of the promotion, BPI will raffle 300 tickets to the cup every month from September to April 2004.

CTT post branches, Galp oil stations and Vista Alegre stores will advertise and offer discounts to holders of the card, which bears the image of former Portuguese soccer star Eusebio.

Inside Stuff will provide PR, press relations and marketing campaigns for BPI through July 2004.

General Manager Ana Matias said BPI hired IS directly because of its strong reputation as a sports marketer in Portugal. She said the will beef up her staff for the contract, which has undisclosed billings and will

end in September.

Inside Stuff designed the human logo of 34,309 people that won Portugal its bid for the cup. The 10-strong firm is also working for Portugal Telecom, Coca Cola and Hyundai, all sponsors of the Euro cup.
