EU tackles green issues with £1m awareness work

BRUSSELS: The European Union is to spend almost £1m on an information campaign to boost Europeans’ awareness of green issues and increase support for its environmental policies.

The pan-European campaign – for which a PR agency tender closed last month – will aim to ‘increase public envi-ronmental awareness’, according to the tender document, with the ultimate goal to ‘bring about changes in environmental attitudes and behaviour’.

The aim of the campaign is to help meet the environmental goals set out in the sixth Environment Action Programme, the document adopted in 2001 that forms the backbone of the EU environmental policy until 2010 and looks at areas such as climate change.

Environment unit head of information Ylva Tiveus said it was ‘too early’ to reveal details of the PR push.
