Young, who was general manager of global marketing for GE Medical Systems – the healthcare tech arm of GE – will handle work including media relations, brand management, internal comms and community relations, reporting to CEO and chairman Edward Breen.
The hire comes more than a year after the Bermuda-based group’s board of directors handed the reins of its day-to-day PR operation to crisis firm Robinson Lerer & Montgomery (RLM). Young represents the second senior appointment to Tyco’s comms team in recent weeks. The company named Ed Arditte, former BancBoston executive, as SV-P of investor relations six weeks ago.
During his 15 years at GE, Young also held posts including director of communications and public affairs for GE global research.
It is unknown how much longer RLM will continue to occupy Tyco’s corporate communications offices once Young assumes his role later this month.
The firm was retained shortly after the company’s now-disgraced CEO Dennis Kozlowski left under a cloud of indictment in mid-2002.
Since then, Tyco has seen the arrival of a new management team that includes Breen and a new chief financial officer, David FitzPatrick.
