The appointment follows a management reshuffle that extended Alcatel Spain's president Rafael Redondo’s responsibilities to Portugal and Latin America, said a company spokeswoman.
Reporting to Redondo, Porro will lead a large PR network for Alcatel in Iberia, Central and South America.
Porro said his job will be to position Alcatel as the leading brand in its key telecoms infrastructure and broadband applications businesses in the region. He will also promote the benefits of company restructuring to shareholders.
Porro’s appointment comes at a time of dwindling fortunes for Alcatel, one of France’s biggest companies and a top provider of telecoms technology across the world.
The group posted a 161 million-euro loss in the first quarter, hurt by volatile currencies and the continuing telecom slump. Sales fell 31% to 2.9 billion euros, down from 4.2 billion euros in the same period last year.
Alcatel has given a gloomy outlook for the telecoms industry this year but said it is confident certain restructuring initiatives will allow it to break even in 2003.
Porro has in the past handled PR for the group in France, Africa, the Middle East and Central Asia. Prior to this role he was head of IT at Alcatel’s consulting firm FYCSA.
