The unit will be headed by the university’s current director of marketing Lori Manders. She takes the new title of director of external affairs and will have a staff of 60.
Manders said the university was bringing together all staff who were involved in its external positioning.
The shake-up also involves the creation of a new head of comms post which, Manders said, would be responsible for press and corporate relations, corporate events, internal comms and political relations.
‘The new post will be key in supporting the development of the new office,’ she said.
The shake-up was triggered by the retirement of external relations director Ron Taylor.
Manders said one of the main challenges ahead is fundraising. The university raised £47m last year and is hoping to double that this year.
