DIARY: Heavy security presence keeps lid on Penrose's birthday shenanigans

Financial services PR agency Penrose is beginning to get a bit of a reputation for its wild parties.

So much so that bosses at Square Mile venue 1 Lombard Street were a little wary of hosting the agency's fifth birthday bash, held last week, after previous party antics got a little out of hand.

Guests at last November's Penrose shindig were greeted by a fleet of ambulances and police cars after some rather unfortunate 'incidents'.

A rowdy and drunken journalist (not, we hasten to assure, from PRWeek) apparently fell down the venue's stone staircase, losing a few teeth in the process, while a gatecrasher wandered in and 'fell down a hole'.

This year, however, guests were greeted by a phalanx of burly bouncers instead.

'The managers at the venue were a bit cautious about the party, but couldn't say no to the business, so they decided to up the security,' says Penrose partner Andrew Nicholls.

Luckily - and despite a 600-strong turnout - this year's bacchanal turned out to be a much more sophisticated, and injury-free, affair.
