As part of the deal, the Portuguese telecoms heavyweight will gain the title of ‘Official COP Sponsor’ and use the slogan ‘Official Telecommunications for COP’ for future campaigns to promote its telecoms and multimedia arms.
The Sponsorship’s financial details weren’t disclosed.
‘We are once again showing our commitment to the Olympic team. We are confident that our national team will do everything to make millions of Portuguese proud in Athens 2004,’ PT said in a statement.
Portugal’s biggest telecoms company, PT is well known for sponsoring sports events. The company and COP signed a similar sponsorship deal to support the Portuguese Olympic team in Sydney 2000.
PT also provides funding to several sports institutions in Portugal and in Brazil, where it has a big presence. In the past, the company has provided aid for tennis, rugby, and gymnastics sports leagues.
In Portugal, PT has sponsored popular events such as O Estoril Open and Europeu de Futebol.
To celebrate the sponsorship, PT’s president Miguel Horta e Costa and COP counterpart Vicente Moura will join Athens 2004 mission chief Alipio Oliveira in a ceremony in Lisbon.
