DIARY: Westminster lights the touch paper and Corby's comms man explodes

Westminster City Council has inadvertently triggered an urban-versus-rural scrap within the IPR local government group over, of all things, an offer to host the group's next committee meeting.

What to Westminster seemed like a generous offer is being interpreted by those outside London as tantamount to a declaration of war.

Group secretary and communications officer at Corby Borough Council Jon Whowell is particularly incensed.

In a leaked email to all committee members, Whowell lets rip: 'PR and local government does exist outside London ... we should not be blinkered that London is the only place to be.'

He rounds off with probably the least convincing argument yet that Corby, not Westminster, should play host: 'Harvey Nic's (sic) is not just in Knightsbridge - OK, it's not in Corby, but we do have a Co-Op!'

Whowell must have got lost in the local branch of the trusty Co-Op, for he was unavailable to comment as PRWeek went to press. We await the committee's decision on this most vital of matters.
