Busfield wants to concentrate on exclusive news and celebrity interviews: 'It's important features are showbiz-led, but showbiz with an edge.'
She pointed to the newspaper's coverage of reality TV shows as something to build on - it is now the official newspaper for the next series of I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here.
Busfield also emphasised campaigning as something to focus on, pointing to the Sarah Payne sex offenders name and shame campaign two years ago, and the recent yellow ribbon-wearing campaign aimed at showing support for British troops in Iraq.
She will report to assistant editor (features) Gary Thompson and replaces acting deputy features editor David Jarvis, who is returning to the news desk to resume his role as special projects editor.
Busfield spent three years on The Sun before joining the News of the World in 2000.
