DIARY: Campbell admits there are things 'beyond his control' at race awards

Alastair Campbell must have been busy training for the London marathon run last Friday, when he failed to show at The Commission for Racial Equality's annual Race in the Media Awards, where he was meant to be the keynote speaker.

Campbell sent his apologies, blaming 'events beyond his control'.

CRE chair Trevor Philips commented: 'Given that most observers thought there were no events beyond his control, we can imagine how serious the situation is.'
