INTERNATIONAL: Tutwiler poised to take Beers' role in US administration

WASHINGTON: Ambassador to Morocco and longtime US Republican strategist Margaret Tutwiler is reported to be in negotiations to replace Charlotte Beers as Under Secretary of State for Public Affairs and Public Policy.

Beers, who was an icon among advertising executives before landing the Bush administration role in 2001, abandoned her post last month for health reasons (PRWeek, 14 March 2003).

While many in the public diplomacy community criticised Beers for a too-slick 'sales' approach - her 'Shared Values' ad campaign was rebuffed both overseas and internally at the State Department - Tutwiler is already being hailed as a career politico more suited to the task.

Prior to assuming her ambassadorial role in Morocco in July 2001, Tutwiler served as a spokeswoman at both the Treasury and State Departments.
