EDITORIAL: ... and at a local government level

Moves this week by the Society of Editors and LG Communications to campaign together to make local government more accessible to residents are a welcome recognition of both groups' shared interests.

While journalists and PROs too often find themselves on opposing sides, it is gratifying that they can find so much common ground.

As a recent survey suggests, it is just as difficult for a PRO to promote such jargon to emerge from modernisation as 'liveability' and 'scrutiny committees', as it is for journalists to report it, or residents to understand it.

The way forward though, is tough. The task now is to convince those at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister - arguably more concerned with settling the fire dispute and satisfying John Prescott's dream of regionalisation - that reform of council politics is just as important.
