Diageo to step up lobby work after comms overhaul

Diageo GB is stepping up its lobbying of Government over drinks industry regulatory issues following the completion of an in-house PR overhaul.

The company - the sales and marketing arm of Diageo Plc - has hired former Bell Pottinger Consultants senior consultant Tim Rycroft for 'closer liaison' with government on issues such as the National Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy, according to commercial PR manager Paul Flanagan.

Corporate affairs director Tony Mair, who has overseen the PR overhaul, said: 'As social issues continue to play prominently in the policy-making arena, we want to be sure we are part of a reasonable debate.'

Rycroft, who was made redundant from WS in November, takes the newly created role of government affairs director.

External affairs director Wendy Deller, who declined the offer of a role in the revamped PR department, is to depart later this month, alongside comms director Harriet Wright, who is also leaving (PRWeek, 28 February).
