DIARY: Randall advises Bhs billionaire to let the PROs handle his media calls

Everyone needs a critical friend, especially if they are under the media spotlight as much as retail guru Philip Green. The person filling that role for the Bhs boss - currently lining up a bid for supermarket chain Morrisons - seems to be his long-time confidante, BBC business editor Jeff Randall.

Green, you will recall, was put through the media mill earlier this month, when The Guardian printed verbatim the transcript of a phone conversation in which the famously bullish businessman let rip at the paper's 'f**king Irish c**t' of a finance editor who 'couldn't f**king read'.

Randall received the IPR's President's Medal last week from ex-president Jon Aarons for services to PR. At the celebratory lunch, Randall was asked how he would have spun Green out of trouble had he still been at Financial Dynamics, where he worked earlier in his career.

'If Philip had asked me, which he didn't, and if he listened to my advice, which he wouldn't, I would have told him not to take so many calls from the media himself,' he said.

Let's see if Green listens...
