INTERNATIONAL: Pakistan creates ministry to handle foreign coverage

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistani government is launching a PR offensive to tackle the reporting of policy issues in the foreign media.

The Government has created a stand-alone department to handle foreign policy coverage, which is set to operate independently from the existing press team.

Syed Mushahid Hussain has been appointed as the Pakistani government's first Minister for External Publicity, and has been charged with leading the newly created division.

The minister has been briefed to work with foreign media reporting on Pakistan and to 'allow the proper handling of foreign policy issues in the media', according to a government spokesperson.

It is understood that the external publicity ministry will be largely independent of the Pakistani Ministry of Information, which has until now been responsible for handling Pakistan's external image.
