But who hates spam more is the question, and the focus of PR efforts from AOL, MSN, and Earthlink. While the country's loathing of spam has skyrocketed over the past several years, the three ISPs have ratcheted up their rhetoric about their dedication to fighting spam.
"Spam at AOL has been an ongoing battle for some time, and we are deeply involved," said media representative Nicholas Graham. "We have member education. We have a strong track record in terms of litigation. And we are working with policy makers who formulate anti-spam laws. We understand that spam is worse than it has ever been."
AOL recently posted a letter on its "welcome" page, stating that it is listening to customers about improving service. AOL recently surveyed members about ways it can improve, and stopping spam topped the list.
"All of us at AOL are outraged by the number of junk e-mails we get on a daily basis," the letter stated. "We get the same amount and the sam kind of spam that you do. Most of all, we are outraged that our kids are being exposed to vile porn spam online. We are fed up with spam, and we hate it as much as you do."
While MSN and Earthlink declined to comment on their anti-spam PR efforts, both ISPs have been fighting spam publicly. MSN has filed lawsuits against people it suspects of collecting e-mail addresses from its Hotmail servers to spam users.
Earthlink has promoted itself for the past couple of years as the ISP that protects its users' privacy, and is touting its spam-blocking software.
