Making it just a bit easier for parents: How to provide support for parents both before and after welcoming a child

Real Chemistry invites our employees to bring their whole selves to work and provides support for each milestone. We recognize people perform their best when they are holistically supported, and that new parents require support both before AND after welcoming a child. This support enhances our investments in parental leave policies, health benefits, wellness programs, and professional development. By providing an individualized, comprehensive form of coaching, Real Chemistry helps our employees adapt and embrace their title of ‘Working Parent’.

When employers provide parental leave, the focus is often placed on the preparation ahead of delivery to transition away from work, with little attention paid to the employee’s return. At Real Chemistry, we recognize the need for continued support as parents adapt to the transition to working parenthood, which is why we developed and offer the Your 4th Trimester® program to every employee when they are welcoming a child.

Employees often receive support prior to parental leave that focus on planning, communication, and coverage. At Real Chemistry, we think it is as important to focus on the employees’ needs when returning to their careers and through the two months post return. The program's coaches counsel on a wide variety of issues for which employees often need support. Solutions are tailored to each individual’s needs and organizational role, since challenges are as unique as each family situation. And Real Chemistry offers this support whether it is the employee’s first, second, fifth baby; by birth or adoption; for both mothers and fathers.

Former participant Howie Chan—a brand strategist at Real Chemistry and a father of two—shared his appreciation after participating in Your 4th Trimester. Both he and his wife shared in the benefit, and he applauded the fact that they were “not compartmentalized into the father, or the mother, or the spouse. We're a unit… going through the program together really helped decrease the stress and provided a level of support for both of us where I found I can really perform at my best at Real Chemistry, and at the same time, be present with and support my family.”

And while one might assume the one-to-one coaching meetings are solely focused on work-related topics, those who experience Your 4th Trimester recognize it is much, much more. Casey Mastroyannis—Senior Group Director and new mother—experienced a shift in her perceptions after her very first Your 4th Trimester coaching session. She shares “Rather than trying to force motherhood into my previous lifestyle and working habits, the program encouraged (and protected) me in my journey of becoming a new professional altogether, one that flexed around my unique experience as a mother. This parent-first approach has helped eliminate the stress of “trying to be who I was before” which has in turn ensured that I am productive and efficient whilst embracing this new me.”

The success of the Your 4th Trimester program at Real Chemistry shows that as employees continue to balance the demands of work with the demands of everyday life, everyone can benefit from a little extra support – especially our working parents. Furthermore, the best way to do so is to invite all aspects of their lives into the fold, enabling them to fully adapt to the life change of starting or continuing to build their families.

Your 4th Trimester is an offering of Broad Perspective Consulting. The program has been offered to Real Chemistry employees since 2017.
