FoE to lobby MPs and Government on new Water Bill

Environmental campaigning group Friends of the Earth is stepping up its lobbying efforts in support of a new Water Bill which is set to help safeguard the future of Britain's river supply and freshwater wildlife.

FoE living world campaigner Matt Phillips said comms will be aimed at MPs and the Government in a bid to ensure their decision to pass the Bill is not swayed by the lobbying efforts of water firms opposed to the legislation.

The Bill is designed to bring old licences, which FoE claims allows firms to extract unsustainable levels of water from UK rivers, in line with modern licences.

The proposed legislation will put a time limit on the old licences, allowing them to be reviewed by the Environment Agency and, if necessary, reduced to sustainable volumes.

Phillips said: 'The Water Bill is very welcome and long overdue - it was promised nearly six years ago.

'The water multinationals have lobbied hard to get the Bill's strongest measures watered down, but the Government and MPs must resist the corporate lobbyists,'he added.
